1.Garvey is a young parole officer. Garvey always visited Cole when he was in the detention center. Cole could not figure out why Garvey visited so regularly. Garvey found the time to come see Cole everyday, and he did little experiments with Cole to see the kind of person he was. Garvey is a nice kind person who just wants to help Cole. Garvey is a good man and what I learned is that he is willing to help people to make a better community.

2. Edwin is a Tlingit elder from Drake. Edwin came to Cole's hearing when he recovered from the hospital. I see that Edwin is a good person because, like Garvey, he wanted to help Cole. Edwin came to the hearing because he believed that Cole wanted to change and that he wants another chance on the island. By coming to the hearing, he wanted to convince Circle Justice to give Cole another chance. What I learned about Edwin is that if you give him a reason to help you, he will do what he can to help.

3. Peter's father is very protective of Peter. Mr.Driscal talked to Cole about how he has changed and what he did to Peter. Peter's father doesn't like Cole, but he is willing to leave Peter on the island. He gave Cole a warning not to hurt Peter at all, or else. Mr. Driscal is a protective dad, and what I learned about Peter's father is that he is a man that will do anything for his son.

Questions
1.Cole was told, "What you do to the animals, you do to yourself," what is your opinion towards this statement?
I think the statement, "What you do to the animals you do to yourself", is true. It is similar to the saying,"What comes around goes around." If you take what you need from the island, and care for the animals, the animals will live in peace. If you harm the animals, the animals may defend themselves and harm you.
Follow-up: How is the saying,"Treat others the way you want to be treated", is relevant to the saying above?
2. How would you feel if you were in Cole's situation when he was mauled by the spirit bear? What would you think of?
I would be terrified. I would have a different view on life. I would think back into the past about all the things I did, and the things I might have regret doing. It is very hard for someone to change so fast, but if I had a near death experience and survived, I would want to turn into a better person.
Follow-up: How would a near death experience affect your life in the future?
3. If Cole had never gone to the island, and stayed in Minneapolis, would he have changed?
If Cole had stayed in Minneapolis, I think he wouldn't have changed. Cole has been to therapists before and they didn't work. Cole kept doing crimes and kept hurting other people. If he stayed, he would have went to jail. If Cole went to jail, it would not have helped him at all. Without the help of Edwin and Garvey and his time on the island, Cole would have been the same boy nobody liked.

1. Cole is a teenager who makes bad choices. He first robbed a hardware store. Then he brutally beat up Peter Driscal, the boy who turned him into the police. Cole unleashed his uncontrollable anger upon Peter, and Peter had no chance of defending himself against Cole. His decision to hurt Peter caused him to be put in a detention center. Relating to success, Cole was very unsuccessful because his decision to hurt Peter did not benefit him at all.

2. Cole had found a large log. It was perfect size for a canoe, but he knew that it would not be right. Cole chose to build the totem pole. So that he couldn't build canoe, Cole hacked at the log until he could no longer use it as a canoe. Cole was successful because he did the right thing. He chose to stay on the island and heal instead of escaping. This shows his success toward his healing.

He had to stop thinking of himself and think about life and choices in a different perspective. He had to stop trying to control everything. In the end, Cole knew he wasn't the only one to think about. Cole is successful because he learned to be invisible, to not only think of yourself all the time.
